Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Information for Our Clients

To comply with New Zealand’s Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Act 2009, all real estate agencies must verify the identity of their clients before conducting certain types of business.

This legal requirement helps detect and deter money laundering and terrorism financing, keeping New Zealand businesses and communities safe.

Why we need to verify your identity

Before we can list a property for sale, act as an agent, or establish a business relationship with you, we must confirm who you are. This process is called Customer Due Diligence (CDD). We are required by law to complete this verification regardless of how long you have lived in the community or if you are a returning client.

What information we will collect

The exact information we need to collect depends on whether you are acting as an individual, on behalf of a company, or through a trust.

  • Individuals: We will need to see official government-issued photo identification (such as a valid NZ Passport or NZ Driver Licence) along with proof of your residential address (such as a recent utility bill or bank statement).
  • Companies and Trusts: We will need to identify the entity itself, as well as the individuals who ultimately own or control it (the "beneficial owners"). This includes directors, shareholders holding more than 25% ownership, trustees, and sometimes beneficiaries.
  • Source of Funds / Wealth: In certain scenarios, such as high-value transactions or complex structures, we may also be legally required to ask for information about the source of your funds or overall wealth.

What happens if you cannot provide this information?

If you are unable or unwilling to provide the required identity verification documents, we are legally prohibited from acting for you, listing your property, or completing your real estate transaction.
